Amongst the numerous DTG printer models, the Epson R1900 DTG printer deserves special mention. As with every product from Epson, the R1900 also exhibits higher quality and longevity. The product features several unique features that differentiate it from the rest of the lot. • Brand: Epson
  • Printing Technology: Inkjet
  • Color: Black
  • Connectivity: USB
  • Model: R1900

Performance

The wide-format DTG printer from Epson features a printing speed of 1.04 ppm for monochrome and color prints. Despite the comparatively lower printing speed, the printer is compatible and lightweight enough to be used as a desktop printer with roughly 26 pounds net weight. It also features one of the sharpest monochrome prints among many DTG printers.

The printer can capture and scan even the finest details on the actual image and reproduce it with excellent quality, especially when printed on glossy paper. It is estimated that the R1900 performs quite similarly to a professional photo printer with a high-quality darkest black with 2.33 dMax depth. The color gradients featured on R1900 are highly accurate and smooth, which enables the output print to be highly detailed and appealing.

When it comes to performance, the product features multiple printing modes for better flexibility and convenience. The three different modes on the product are Photo Mode, Best Photo Mode, and Photo RPM Mode. The Photo Mode is faster than the other modes, but it compromises the final print quality.

The Best Photo Mode is this product’s most popularly used printing mode as it produces decent quality prints without occupying much time. The Photo RPM Mode is the best out of the three in terms of print quality. It ensures that all fine details of the original image are included in print. But this mode takes a comparatively longer time to print.

When it comes to the color performance of the printer, the observations are mixed. Although it features decent color performance, there are certain mild inconsistencies with a couple of colors. But as far as the color gamut (the number of colors that a printer can produce) is concerned, the product scores well. It features one of the widest color gamuts of the section, and it exhibits the range mostly in darker shades like green.

The product also comes with a set of quality ink cartridges, enabling the user to start using the printer immediately. It features eight different ink cartridges containing colors like Magenta, Yellow, Red, Matte Black, Photo Back, Orange, Cyan, and Gloss Overcoat. The gloss overcoat provides a transparent yet shiny outer covering to the images.

Design

The design of the R1900 is quite similar to the regular Epson printers. It is around 15 inches high, yet designed in a sleek design to cope with desktop uses. Most of the front part is occupied by the front paper tray, through which the printed papers come out. The paper insert tray is present behind the printer, which can be removed and replaced with rolls of paper to produce considerably longer prints. Two USB ports are also featured behind the product, which enables the device to be connected to two computers simultaneously.

Eight separate ink cartridges dedicated to different colors are visible inside the printer. The ink compartment usually comes with a cover, on the removal of which the user can see the cartridges arranged one by one. There are special slots just above the cartridges with labels with the names of the colors to be inserted into each position. There is an LED indicator light just below each of the cartridges. When a particular cartridge runs empty, the respective LED light automatically switches on, making it extremely easier for the user to identify the empty cartridge.

One of the cartridges features a special enhancer formula from Epson, designed to provide a glossy finish to the printed images. The Hi-Gloss 2 formula enables the printed images to have a glow lasting hundreds of years. It consists of clear ink, which the printer usually sprays onto the images.

The printer is designed to print up to 13×44 inches. The flexibility exhibited by this printer is extremely high, and it can print on almost any flat surface, despite the nature of the material. The printer accompanies by an attachable CD/ DVD tray, which can be mounted on the front part of the printer and can be used to print on CDs and DVDs.

The printer’s input tray is designed to hold around 120 sheets of paper. This high-capacity input tray makes it possible to carry out bulk printing orders using the printer. The printer’s top has several control buttons, including the power button, the ink button, the paper feed button, and the paper roll feed button.

The ink button blinks if and when any of the ink cartridges are running low on ink. Also, the paper feed button blinks to indicate any paper errors on the system. If and when the ink button and the paper feed button blink alternately, it means that the USB connection with the device has some error.

The design includes two USB ports and no wireless ports. Thus, the user must use a computer to connect to the printer and feed the image to be printed. The dual USB ports enable the user to connect two devices simultaneously.

Usage

The manufacturers design the R1900 DTG printer to have an extremely user-friendly interface. It features a simple and straightforward setup process. The user need not need professional help to set up the system but resort to the printed manual that accompanies the printer. As no image editing features or tools are present with the printer, the software setup and usage are extremely minimal and simple.

The installing and setup process of the printer takes only a maximum of 30 minutes. Once the printer is received and has been checked for any peripheral flaws, the user can insert the ink cartridges accompanying the printer into the concerning slots. The user has to ensure that the ink hasn’t settled down on the cartridges; thus, it is important to shake them well before the insertion.

Once the ink cartridges are properly inserted, the device has to be plugged in and put in for the initializing process. The device could take roughly three minutes to initialize completely. The user can now install the concerned software through a connected computer and install it to the printer. The installation process is extremely simple, and the user only has to provide the necessary information and permissions during the installation process. Once the installation is complete, the printer provides the option to print out a test page so that the user can cross-check the print requirements and can make necessary changes if needed.

The printer is compatible with both Windows and Mac devices; thus, it is highly flexible and convenient for users to install and set up the software.

The menu section of the printer includes four subsections; which are

  • Main menu
  • Advanced menu
  • Page Layout
  • Maintenance

As the name suggests, the main menu consists of the most important or main options. Some of the options included in the main menu are paper type, paper size, etc. The users can choose the type of paper and size of paper according to each printer’s requirement, and this section also provides a preview of the cartridges so that the users can have a quick glance at the ink levels and make necessary refills.

The advanced section of the menu consists of deeper settings of the printer, like the paper source, print quality, etc. The color management features are also included in this section. Color management features like saturation, contrast, brightness, etc., are essential for maintaining the quality of the prints. But the catch of this menu is that no preview feature is available for this section; thus, the color management options adjustments could only be visible during the printing. Therefore, experts usually advise users to color-correct the images to be printed beforehand using convenient editing tools with a solid preview feature.

The page-setup section includes options that determine the layout of the print, like the measurements of the margin, sizing of the image on the paper, etc.

The maintenance section is responsible for options that are required during the cleaning and maintenance of the printer, like checking the alignment of the print heads, monitoring the arrangement of the ink cartridges, clearing and cleaning the nozzles, and many more.

Comparison

Among the many competitors available for the Epson R1900 DTG printer in the market, some popular products are from the Canon brand.

When compared to the Canon printers, the R1900 features several advantages. The Epson one scores in the color gradient and accuracy and also in the sharpness of the color black. The R1900 features a broader color gamut than the Canon printers and also exhibits the lowest color errors.

Regarding the paper sizes and materials supported, both the R1900 and the Canon printers feature similar properties and features. Both of them are capable of printing high-quality borderless prints on almost all types of materials, including paper and garments. They can also print wide format prints, spanning up to 13x 44 inches.

The Hi-Gloss clear ink present with the Epson R1900 is a unique feature when compared to its counterparts. It provides a glossy finish to the printed images, which is unachievable by other printers.

Regarding the user interface, the R1900 features a much simpler and more straightforward user interface than the section’s rest. The software setup and installation process is comparatively less time-consuming for the Epson R1900 DTG printer.

FAQs

1.Is DTG printing cheaper than screen printing?

DTG printing and screen printing costs a decent amount of money for the users. But if the printing is for a comparatively smaller amount, DTG printing has proved more feasible and affordable. But as far as larger printing orders are concerned, experts observe that screen printing will cost comparatively less.

2. Is DTG better than sublimation printing?

The purpose of both DTG printing and sublimation printing is one and the same; to print on fabrics. But as both printings use different processes, the output product differs. Sublimation printers use technology that enables the ink to fuse with the fabric; thus, it is advisable to use sublimation printing to print light-colored fabrics. Whereas, DTG printing offers a technology that comes with a greater color gamut and, thus, is ideal to be printed in any colored fabric, whether light-shaded or dark-shaded.

3. How long will DTG print last?

If the ink is applied correctly and is let to have enough time to dry out naturally, DTG prints tend to last a long time and withstand a high number of washes. Many top-notch printers in the market claim to provide DTG prints that can last hundreds of years. The user is expected to thoroughly follow the printing process mentioned in the accompanying manual and use authentic inks for long-lasting prints from a DTG printer.

4. Do DTG prints crack?

The cracking phenomenon usually depends on the quality of the printer used to print the images. Usually, DTG prints do not start cracking or fading for quite a while, provided that the garment is maintained well. Several DTG models from Epson feature crack-free technology, which claims and offers images that do not face cracking for a great deal of time.
